It's sobering to hike a mountain in the morning and then have dinner with a friend who used to be able to hike, but now the symptoms of his inherited, fatal, incurable disease confine him to a wheelchair. I hate Machado-Joseph disease.

 How can you make life smoother for a dying friend?
